The existence of Band, in Chaltlang Corps dates back to the 70’s having 7 members who used to play on special occasions like the Sunrise Service. But, it eventually died out as the years rolled by and has silenced for about 15 years. The few instruments they have acquired hung in the storeroom and have since become the dwelling place of spiders. In fact, it is no wonder that it has lost its appeal and does not seem fit to produce any melodious tune at all.

The arrival of 1998 brings a new beginning for the Corps as it ushered in a new milestone in the Band History. It is quite different from the like of any other Corps since the Youth take far more initiatives in the re-building work. This is not to imply that the Senior Corps give a cold heart. They are more than happy to welcome back the melody that they have missed for a long time, but not yet ready to finance the huge sums needed for purchasing the instruments with the Church building under construction. The Salvation Army Youth members take upon themselves to carryout necessary works and chalk out plans to raised the required amount. Money began to pour in from zealous soldiers. At the same time, eager youth members began to learn staff notations from volunteer instructors from outside the Corps. Eventually, one person capable of leading moved in. Camps were organized one after the other. Instruments are borrowed from other Corps to fill the need. The Youth members, doing all kinds of odd jobs from selling articles to carrying heavy loads, carry out all kinds of fund raising activities.

The Band was fully alive by the end of 1999 and was in possession of 15 instruments with 22 members. They participated in Division’s Rally and Soldiers Rally of other Divisions, conducting Open-air services and March of Witnesses. They traveled far and wide to respond to the call of distant brethren bereaved of Band Ministry. The Bandsmen were enthusiastic and happily undertook any journey, how strenuous it might seem.

Then, finally in 2000, the Band was handed over to the Senior Corps to be a full-fledged Corps Band. Installation of 17 Bandsmen was solemnized with 15 instruments on January 2000. The Bandsmen actively participated and side-by-side, organized Band classes for eager youth whenever possible. In 2001, Commissioner Lalthanngura, Territorial Commander knowing the shortage of instruments graciously present 5 instruments to fill the needs of the Corps Band.Every Sunday there is a Band Service and a regular practice session on Tuesday evening. Sometimes, practice is organized throughout the week. Also, Camps are organized when situation demands. Bandsmen contribute for their Ministry through Donations and collections in the services. Fund Raising activities are still organized to be used for instruments maintenance and making of tune book & sheets copies.
